Wolverhampton Wanderers Vs Radcliffe Olympic Ladies
Sunday 5th September 2010
The fixture list threw up an awkward away trip for our first game of the season. Against a strong professionally backed Wolves team, who will be looking to challenge at the top end of league this season. But having finished third last time out Radcliffe themselves will be looking to push the top teams once again.
The Blues welcomed their summer signings of Aileen Whelan, Stacey Pearce, Kati Ramsey and Holly Searson for their first team debuts. The early exchanges in the game were difficult for the Blues playing in to a strong head wind. But wolves didn’t capitalise on their possessional dominance early on, and the Blues made them pay with goals from Chantelle Lewis and Rania Ramadan. At two nil up the Blues took control of the game and more chances came and went, before a lapse at the back let Wolves back in to the game.
In the second period and with the wind behind them Radcliffe took control of the game. And on the hour mark Ramadan extended the Blues lead and it wasn’t long before Aileen Whelan scored her first goal for the club to make the score 4-1. A lapse in concentration let the home side in for a second late on but nothing could dampen the Blues spirits on an impressive opening day victory.
Result 4-2 win
Manager Rob Wilson……..When the fixtures came out we knew this would be a tricky game to start the season. But credit to the girls, all the hard work and tough games in pre-season seem to have paid off as we hit the ground running here today. A little disappointed with the goals we conceded but its early days and having changed the shape and formation in the summer it will take awhile for everything to come together.
Singled out…………Rania Ramadan, took to her knew role and responsibilities well. Was solid defensively and scored two goals being a driving force for the team all afternoon
